Growing our water and wastewater network
We’re investing in water and wastewater infrastructure to support housing growth and ensure our community has access to reliable water services now and into the future.
Why we are growing our networks
We’re working with the State Government and industry leaders to deliver effective water and wastewater solutions to support housing growth. This is the biggest expansion of our metropolitan water and wastewater network in decades, and it’s crucial for new housing developments on the outskirts of Adelaide, particularly in the northern suburbs. These areas need large-scale infrastructure to ensure reliable water and wastewater services for growing communities.
Unlocking new homes for the future
As part of the State Government’s Housing Roadmap, SA Water are investing $1.5 billion during the next 4 years to grow and expand our water and wastewater networks to enable an estimated 50,000 new homes to be built across South Australia. This includes an unprecedented $1.2 billion investment in critical growth infrastructure specifically across Adelaide’s north and south to directly unlock 11,000 new homes where they’re needed the most.
With ongoing investment, the network will eventually support up to 50,000 new homes by the 2050s, helping create sustainable and thriving communities. Read more about how we're supporting housing growth
What’s included in the upgrades?
Our planned works include:
- 30 kilometres of new trunk water mains
- 54 kilometres of trunk wastewater mains
- 9 new water and wastewater pumping stations
- 2 new water storage tanks
Where the upgrades are happening
This directly enables new homes to be built in development areas across Adelaide’s north and south, including:
- Angle Vale
- Blakeview
- Eyre
- Gawler East
- Riverlea
- Roseworthy
- Onkaparinga Heights (formerly Hackham)
- Virginia
Minimising disruptions while we deliver
To deliver this essential infrastructure, we’re working across multiple sites, mainly in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. We work closely with local communities throughout construction to minimise disruptions and make sure the work is completed safely and efficiently.
Why is my water pressure lower than normal?
A combination of recent hot weather, higher than usual demand and ongoing network upgrade work is contributing to some changes in water pressure in parts of Adelaide’s northern suburbs. These prolonged hot weather conditions have significantly increased demand across the network particularly in peak times, and when combined with critical infrastructure upgrades to support our network expansion, some customers are experiencing lower than normal water pressure depending on their location.
These significant upgrade works will increase network capacity in Adelaide’s north and while these works are being completed, there may be short periods of reduced pressure as we test, commission and connect new pipes. During these upgrades, we will continue to find ways to improve water network performance for customers ahead of new infrastructure coming online.
Find out more about water pressure and see suburbs currently experiencing low pressure on the SA Water website.
What happens to roads and footpaths after our works?
We work closely with the local council and follow all required reinstatement obligations, reinstating the parts of the road, footpath or the environment directly impacted by our works.

How are new pipes brought onto the network?
When we install new pipes, we follow a thorough commissioning process to make sure they’re safe, clean, and ready to join the network. You can learn more about what this involves below.
Keep informed and get involvedWe’re keeping local communities and stakeholders informed as we deliver these essential network upgrades. Through communication with residents and businesses, online updates, local advertising, and regular meetings with local and state government, we’re making it easy for everyone to learn about the project, share feedback, and stay updated on progress and impacts in their area.
