We have upgraded the water supply network in the regional towns of Yunta, Terowie and Manna Hill to deliver safe and clean drinking water to our local customers for the first time.

Historically, each township has received a non-drinking mains water supply, with customers required to boil water before it is suitable for drinking, preparing food or brushing teeth. All of our local customers receive annual notifications reminding them of the necessary precautions to take.

Completed in May 2025, the project has delivered important new water infrastructure to bring each town’s water supply in line with health and safety requirements within the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (2011), with SA Health confirming the water’s safety through comprehensive water quality testing.

The upgrades have varied across each town, involving a combination of new elevated water storage tanks, water main network upgrades, and additional water disinfection stations to maintain the water’s safety and quality as it moves through the underground pipe network.

Upgrades to the Yunta water network have now been completed, with our local customers receiving safe and clean drinking water to their taps for the first time.

Our customer’s drinking water comes from the River Murray, where it is filtered and treated at our Morgan Water Treatment Plant and pumped through the Morgan Whyalla pipeline to Peterborough. It is then transported by a dedicated drinking water tanker to Yunta’s water storage tanks.

    The network upgrades included:

    • Construction of a new, 114 kilolitre-capacity water storage tank.
    • Creating a new access road to the nearby vehicle road stop, and additional road resurfacing to the Barrier Highway.
    • Constructing a new disinfection system to ensure a safe supply of drinking water throughout the water network.
    • Upgrades to the town’s existing water network, including new pipe fittings and valves.
    • Twice weekly water carting from Peterborough.

As an additional measure, we are preserving the existing water tower in its original location as it is a much-loved landmark. The old tank was decommissioned and made safe during our works.
