Improving drinking water quality and security for Railway towns

We are delivering new infrastructure to improve both water quality and water security in Yunta.

Currently in the Planning phase, we are assessing design and location options for a new tank and chlorination system, for delivery to the community of Yunta in 2024.

We plan to preserve the existing water tower in its original location as it is a much-loved landmark. The old tank will be decommissioned and made safe during our works.

The township's upgraded infrastructure will:

• improve the quality of the water, with a new disinfection system that will ensure the water supply remains safe to drink
• include a new driveway for improved access to the rest stop, benefiting the community and visitors, and resurface the track back to the Barrier Highway.
• not impact existing vacant land used for parking
• improve reliability in water, with water coming from Peterborough twice weekly, instead of Broken Hill
• improve access to stored water, with upgraded connecting infrastructure, including new pipe fittings and valves

Next steps

We will continue with investigations including ground surveys, potholing and service locations to support construction plans.

For example, geotechnical investigations with boreholes will provide information for the access road including information on soil description, soil movement, site slope, and other conditions relevant for footing and slab planning for the tank structure.

Engaging with the community

We are continuously communicating with the Yunta community to keep everyone updated on the project's progress, answer questions and address concerns. In September 22, we visited Yunta to speak with residents, business owners, and members of the progress association. Many of the locals stopped in for a chat about the project.

We will continue to liaise with all stakeholders as the project progresses from design to construction.
