Over the next 50 years, the demand for water will increase while our drying climate will reduce available sources. The water systems in Greater Adelaide will need to be resilient in the face of future uncertainty and increasing extreme weather such as floods, bushfire and drought.

We are planning now to ensure a secure, sustainable and resilient water supply for future generations. The Resilient Water Futures project will see the delivery of an Urban Water Strategy to outline the vision and objectives of a collaborative, integrated approach to water management for Greater Adelaide.

Resilient Water Futures is being led by SA Water, together with the Department for Environment and Water (DEW), the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA), Green Adelaide and Planning and Land Use Services (PLUS) as key members of a Strategic Advisory Committee. The project is ensuring and realising a state government priority initiative to create and deliver an urban water security plan.

To help inform our planning for the next 50 years, we want to hear from our customers and community to understand your values and preferences for how we manage water to ensure a secure and sustainable water supply for generations to come.

To help inform our planning for the next 50 years, we consulted with our customers and community to understand their values and preferences for how we manage water in our changing world.

We thank the 850+ people took who our survey and provided input on how we ensure secure, resilient water supplies for the future. Your responses ensure we understand community ideas, values and preferences for water management. We found that residents of Greater Adelaide:

    • are most concerned about maintaining high water quality, ensuring enough water for both the future population and reducing impacts of climate variability

    • believe that, beyond use for human needs, healthy waterways and environments (including biodiversity support), public green spaces and water for agriculture are the most important uses for water

    • would prefer not to pay more for their water (or adopt restrictions) unless it ensures higher quality water, ensures resilience or serves to help the environment/agriculture sector.
