Coober Pedy Water Transition
Introduction
Coober Pedy is undergoing a significant change in the management of its water supply system. The South Australian Government has announced that management of the town’s water system will move to SA Water by the end of 2026. This transition aims to enhance safety, reduce water prices for the Coober Pedy community, and improve the long-term sustainability of the water supply.
Background
On 17 February 2026, the Minister for Local Government and the Minister for Housing and Infrastructure announced that SA Water will take over responsibility for Coober Pedy’s water treatment and delivery services from the District Council of Coober Pedy (DCCP) by the end of 2026.
Much of the town’s water infrastructure was built in the 1970s and 1980s and has only received limited upgrades since then. A recent review of essential services recommended that SA Water manage the treatment and distribution of Coober Pedy’s water supply to better meet the community’s long‑term needs.
Why this transition is happening
Aging infrastructure
- Coober Pedy’s water infrastructure was constructed in the 1970s and 1980's and has not undergone major upgrades in recent times.
- The system experiences leaks, outdated metering, and a high risk of failure, posing a serious threat to this essential service.
- SA Water has the experience and resources to sustainably manage the water service for the community.
Cost for residents
- Coober Pedy residents currently pay around $9 per kilolitre for the first 383 litres of water, which is significantly more than the South Australian average.
- A more affordable pricing structure is being developed for Coober Pedy customers.
What needs to be done
Transitioning Coober Pedy’s water services to SA Water involves several important steps. One of the highest priorities is upgrading key parts of the infrastructure to make them safer to operate and more reliable in the future.
Planning has also begun on developing a more affordable water pricing structure, as well as transitioning customers across to SA Water. More information on this will be shared closer to the transition.
SA Water is working closely with the State Government to finalise these important steps. Once we have more details, the community will be informed well ahead of the transition.
What residents can expect
