Zero Cost Energy Future - Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve

Consultation has concluded

To support our goal to achieve a zero cost energy future, we are installing approximately 12 megawatts (MW) of solar panels at the Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve. The solar panels will be installed in the northern portion of the reservoir reserve along Main South Road and Blacks Road at Happy Valley and is expected to take about six months to complete.

The first stage will involve earthworks to develop a stable base to support the solar panel array. Trenching to accommodate the electrical cable network and construction of internal access roads will follow.

The second stage of construction is the installation of the solar panels. The solar panels will be assembled off site, placed onto frames and folded up. They are then transported to the Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve, rolled out and placed carefully into position.

In conjunction with the above activities, a 20-metre width of native vegetation will be planted behind the remaining Aleppo pine trees along Black Road. Planting of the 10-metre width of native vegetation along South Road is complete.

Work will take place Monday to Saturday, between 7am and 7pm.

This installation at Happy Valley is part of our wider plans to install approximately 154 megawatts of solar photovoltaic panels at 33 sites across South Australia.

The Happy Valley Reservoir provides drinking water to more than 40 per cent of metropolitan Adelaide.

Treating and transporting water requires a lot of energy and we are one of the largest electricity users in the state. Our investment in renewable energy generation will reduce our reliance on expensive grid electricity and create a revenue stream, helping to deliver substantial operational savings for the benefit of our customers.

Our installed renewable generating capacity will be equivalent to the power needs of 50,000 average South Australian homes. It will help reduce emissions equivalent to planting seven million trees, or removing more than 32,000 cars from the road per year, every year of operation.

Importantly, our progressive leap forward will help the global transition to a low-carbon future.
