Together with our delivery partner, the McConnell Dowell Diona Joint Venture (MDJV), SA Water is planning a major water infrastructure upgrade in Adelaide’s southern region. The program includes construction of a new trunk main extending the existing network from Myponga Reservoir to supply customers in Wirrina Cove, along with new water storage tanks and a pump station. These upgrades will strengthen network reliability, improve water quality, and support long-term growth in surrounding communities.

The proposed trunk main is expected to generally follow the alignment shown in the graphic, along Main South Road and through adjacent land where required to avoid major traffic disruption, with supporting infrastructure located at key points along the alignment. New storage tanks will help maintain consistent levels of service, particularly during periods of peak demand.

Once complete, SA Water customers in Wirrina Cove will be supplied via SA Water’s Myponga drinking water system.

When it’s happening

Early site investigations

To help refine the proposed alignment and final design, investigation works will commence in December 2025. These activities will include:

  • drone surveying along the potential trunk main corridor
  • topographical and geotechnical surveys where required
  • access into the surrounding road reserve and vegetation areas

If at any stage property access is required to complete investigations, we will contact landholders directly to discuss arrangements prior to any work occurring.

Construction Timeframes

This project is still in the early planning phase.

Pre-construction activities are expected to continue throughout 2026, with main construction forecast to begin toward late 2026 into 2027 (subject to approvals and technical requirements). More detailed timing will be shared as planning progresses.

Ali I asked 3 days ago

Hi Ali, thanks for your enquiry.  There are proposals to extend the water network towards Cape Jervis in the future but nothing has been formally agreed upon or funding approved yet. The infrastructure upgrade to Wirrina is the first step in being able to do this however.
