Hahndorf recycled water scheme

As part of our work to protect and enhance the environment, we have been exploring options for use of recycled water from our Hahndorf Wastewater Treatment Plant with the community.

We already recycle about 30 per cent of water from our wastewater treatment plants in Adelaide. This water is used to irrigate parks and gardens, crops and for washing cars and flushing toilets.

The current recycled water quality at Hahndorf offers opportunities for:

• open space irrigation (such as grassed areas)
• some food crop irrigation (trees and vines)
• woodlot irrigation
• ornamental trees and nurseries.

During our investigation period, we opened a discussion with people who would need a higher quality of recycled water to meet their needs.

Hahndorf Wastewater Treatment Plant is capable of supplying approximately 300ML (300 million litres) of recycled water each year and any reuse scheme would likely be operational by June 2024.

This opportunity isn’t limited to a single customer and could provide a sustainable benefit to a number of users depending on location and use.
